A university student caught with drugs in his apartment has claimed a friend that he fell out set him up. The Moroccan national, 21, went on trial at Abu Dhabi Criminal Court along with his roommate, also Moroccan, and another man. The engineering student and the other two are accused of possessing, dealing and taking drugs. Prosecutors said police discovered the banned drug ‘spice’ in their apartment. Cops also found the his roommate, a public relations officer at a firm in the capital, with small pieces in his pockets. The student, giving evidence to Chief Justice Idris bin Mansour, claimed he had been set up after a falling out with a friend. He said: “I had this misunderstanding with my friend and hadn’t seen him for four months since the argument. But he came to me just a week before my arrest and said to me that we should put aside our differences and be friends again.” The student said that the day he was arrested, in November, he was driving the friend to his apartment and arrived to find three officers waiting for them. He said: “The cops searched my clothes and found nothing. They took me to the police station saying I was involved in drug dealings and that they had found drugs in our apartment. My friend must have set me up as he wanted me to get into trouble.” The friend he accused of framing him is not on trial. The Moroccan student’s roommate admitted to consuming spice before but denied the stash found was his. The third defendant, an Egyptian, denied consuming and dealing drugs.
