Derek Whyte: Leicester could win the Premier League title

This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: Derek Whyte: Leicester could win the Premier League title Yes, you have read that headline correctly. Leicester City could conceivably end up winning the Premier League title this season. We keep expecting them to slip up but time and time again this year they have shown their undeniable quality. Last week they faced a struggling Chelsea side and achieved a comfortable victory. They never looked like slipping up at the King Power Stadium and are now 20 points clear of the reigning league champions. This weekend they travel to Goodison Park and it would be no surprise to see them expose Everton’s frailties at the back. Of course everyone expects them to fall away in the second half of the season. The games will come thick and fast over Christmas and their squad won’t be able to cope. At least that is the general consensus. Others believe injuries to in-form striker Jamie Vardy or the excellent Riyad Mahrez could halt their progress. But believe me, it is amazing what you can achieve when confidence is high. You get on a winning run and the momentum carries you a very long way. Your chest is puffed out and you give that little bit extra in every game. It’s true that the history of the Premier League tells us it is virtually impossible to win the title without spending vast amounts of money on world-class players. But I honestly believe that team spirit could carry them a very long way. Manager Claudio Ranieri also deserves plenty of credit for the confidence he has instilled in the squad. He was favourite for the sack at the start of the season but could end up manager of the year. It would be incredibly refreshing to see them lift the title, and I for one hope that it happens come May. Mourinho seems untouchable Such is the amount of money it would take to sack Jose Mourinho that I simply can’t see Chelsea biting the bullet and giving him the boot. Jose can’t seem to inspire his players and has now even turned on them after the loss to Leicester. I don’t think they are refusing to play for him, but I do believe their egos are bruised. They are used to fighting for the title, not fighting relegation. As I mentioned confidence is key, and the Chelsea players have none of it. They look lost on the pitch and simply aren’t working hard enough to grind out results. I think Mourinho has already written off this season and knows that he is virtually untouchable. Sad to see Monk shown the door It was a real shame to see Gary Monk get the sack as I believe more young British managers should be given a chance to test their coaching skills in the top flight. They have been linked with a host of foreign managers, but I just hope they decide to give another Brit the chance to impress. Eddie Howe is doing a wonderful job with Bournemouth, which just goes to show there is home-grown talent in the lower divisions.
