Officers said the man, in his 50s, was at the beach with family and friends at the weekend when he swam too far from shore. “He became fatigued after swimming too far offshore” said Major Ali Al Naqbi, head of the maritime rescue department at Dubai Police. “The man tried to call for help but could not be reached by his friends.” A nearby rescue boat was called and teams sped to the area. “The rapid intervention of police rescue teams helped to save the man’s life,” said Al Naqbi. Police said when rescue officers on jet skis took the man the from sea, he had stopped breathing and had no pulse. Al Naqbi said the family and friends of the victim, a principal at a private school in Dubai, thought it was too late when they saw him being carried motionless from the water. “Our rescue crew used a defibrillator to kick-start the man’s heart,” Al Naqbi said. Police then took the swimmer to Rashid Hospital for further treatment and he was later able to return home. Al Naqbi urged swimmers to be careful while swimming, particularly given the rough seas seen during the winter months. ismail@7days.ae Read the original story at: Rescuers save drowning swimmer in Dubai
