More than a tonne of fake and expired cosmetic products have been seized from women’s salons in Abu Dhabi this year. Abu Dhabi Municipality said it has also fined 66 salons caught using the dodgy products on customers and issued warnings to 35 others found committing other violations. The violations were identified during 1,700 inspection visits carried out on salons and beauty centres across Abu Dhabi since January 2015. Municipal inspectors seized the products from salons after they found they posed a threat to the health of clients. “Inspectors raided the salons after getting complaints from people that they were using unauthorised products that deemed to be harmful to people’s health,” said Khalifa Mohammed Al Rumaithi, director of public health at the municipality. He said the seized products were not registered with the Ministry of Health and, therefore, not authorised to be used in the UAE. “Some unlicensed materials and prohibited medical herbs were found in beauty parlours, some of which were duplicates or adulterations and others were un-hygienically stored,” said Al Rumaithi. Fines of up to Dhs5,000 were imposed on salon owners. news@7days.ae
