Abu Dhabi Criminal Court heard the 17-year-old Arab had been spoilt from an early age by his mother as he was her youngest child. Prosecutors said he would often ask for cash and fell in with a bad crowd who were taking drugs and drinking alcohol. One day towards end of last year, the teen returned home and his mother realised he was drunk and high. “So she decided to stop giving him money as she realised he was using part of the cash to buy drugs and alcohol,” pro­secutors said. A few days later, the son asked his mum for money but she ref­used. “The teen became annoyed, shouted at his mum, who was in the hallway, and said he hated her,” prosecutors said. “When the woman saw her son coming towards her with a knife from the kitchen, she ran to her bedroom and locked herself inside.” The boy knocked on the door and asked his mother to open it for him. When she refused, the young man went into the garden and picked up an axe then tried to break the door down with it. “The mother went to the balcony to get away from her son,” prosecutors said. “She slid as she tried to climb down and fell on the ground, breaking a bone in her foot.” A secur­ity guard saw what was happ­ening and called the police. The teen was charged with attempting to kill his mother, consuming alcohol and consuming drugs. However, he denied the charges. In court, his mother said her son didn’t try to kill her. She said he was just an addict and it was the drugs that made him behave the way he did. She asked Judge Idris bin Mansouri to send the teenager to rehab to be treated for addiction instead of sending him to jail.
