Having a driving licence in the UAE is certainly a huge positive to everyday life, with making long distances convenient and saving up on cab money. If you cannot wait to hit the roads of the country and plan to get your licence soon, here is your guide of how to go about getting your driver’s licence in UAE. For starters, you need to be a resident of the country and over the age of 18 to get a driving permit. In case you do not have any valid licence from other countries, you need to go through all the cycles of driving classes. To kick things off, you will need to head down to a driving institute and open your file for which you would need: Copy of your passport, emirates ID and valid visa An eye test report (Can be done at the centre) Passport size photos (5) A no objection letter signed from your sponsor to get a driver’s license, also carry an Arabic translation of the same In case you have an existing license take the license along with Arabic translation of the same Once you have submitted these documents you will be asked to pick your dates to complete eight hours of theory classes ( Dhs 830) before giving the theory test (Dhs 50). You could either do them back to back and complete them sooner or take one class a day. After you have completed your theory classes, you will be given a date for your theory test which will evaluate you on what was taught in the classes. The results of your theory test will be given immediately. If you have an existing licence from the countries listed below, you could directly apply for your road test: GCC countries, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada , Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK, USA. If you do not have an existing licence, after you pass you theory test, you will be assessed on your driving skills to place you in an area (Ranging from 1-6) based on how much training is needed. Once you are placed in an area, you will have to complete a specific number of hours in each area including practice on a simulation machine.
