A housemaid has been jailed for three years after she accidentally burned a three-year-old boy by pouring drain cleaner on his face. Sharjah Sharia Court of First Instance also fined the Indonesian woman Dhs270,000 and ordered to be deported after serving her sentence. She was found guilty of accidentally pouring drainage acid on the boy, which caused third-degree burns to his face, legs, hands and body. Court records showed the Emirati child was playing with other children at his home in Sharjah’s Al Ramaqiyah area in March. His mother asked the 40-year-old maid to wash his hands and face as he had been playing with paint. “After the maid took the boy to the bathroom, the mother heard him screaming,” prosecutors said. “She said she went to check on her son and was shocked to see her child’s face burning from the acidic substance poured on him.” The child was taken to Al Qasimi Hospital for treatment. He was later transferred to a hospital in Germany for specialised treatment. Sharjah Public Prosecution said the maid had admitted pouring the liquid on the boy during interrogation. However, in court, she claimed the boy had picked up the acid himself and poured it on his body. The boy’s family, who were at the court when Judge Hussein Al Ousouf issued the verdict, said they will appeal the sentence. They said their child had suffered both physical and psychological trauma and that the maid deserved a hasher penalty. The child was adopted by the Emirati family when he was four months old. ismail@7days.ae
