This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: Dubai students raises cash for struggling schools Pupils at a Dubai primary school raised more than Dhs13,000 to support fellow youngsters in developing countries. Grade four students at Emirates International School- Meadows, organised various events to raise money for Dubai Cares, which runs a range of education initiatives in Gaza, Yemen and a number of African states. In groups of five, the students came up with ideas to raise money that included a talent show, a charity football match between parents and students and selling custom-made stationary items for pupils. “After we enrolled with Dubai Cares through the school, we got the students to form groups and come up with ideas, about fundraising projects – what, where, when and why they wanted to do it,” said teacher Gullrukh Rafiq. Once they had a plan in place, 16 groups set out to raise money for the cause. She said: “They were spreading the word in communities, on the streets, during school time and there was a lot of support from the parents too, which was crucial.” Rafiq continued: “We are in a very fortunate position to be in this country and it is important to teach young children about philanthropy, to get them exposed to it for a better future for humanity worldwide.” Indian student, Mishel Liyana Kudel, 8, was part of the talent show team. She said: “We invited everyone, friends, family and teachers to come see us, we advertised around, told people in our community, hung up posters and stuck them on street lights.” Egyptian pupil Rokaya El Khodary, 8 added: “We feel we are very lucky, and there are so many kids around the world who are not as lucky as we are. “Once it was explained what we could do to help them, we put our hearts into it so everyone can have the safe life and have fun like we do.” mahak@7days.ae Read the original story at: Dubai students raises cash for struggling schools
