Abu Dhabi maid on trial for strangling newborn baby

This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: Abu Dhabi maid on trial for strangling newborn baby A maid smashed her newborn baby onto the floor of a bathroom because she feared being jailed for getting pregnant during an illegal affair, a court has heard. The Indonesian woman went into labour and gave birth on her own at the home of her employer in Abu Dhabi. Prosecutors told Abu Dhabi Criminal Court that after delivering the baby girl, the woman threw her on the floor and strangled her. A forensics report said the baby had marks on her neck and bruises on the head and body indicating that she hit the floor with great force. Prosecutors charged the woman with adultery and killing her own baby. But the maid denied the charges when she appeared in court on Tuesday for the first time. She told chief justice Idris bin Mansour that she is married and that her husband made her pregnant while she was in Indonesia. “When I felt the labour pains, I rushed into the bathroom and delivered the baby by myself as there was no one at home to help me,” said the maid. “I then took the baby to hospital but when I reached there she had died. I didn’t kill my child.” The accused insisted that the baby fell on the floor accidentally during delivery and said the marks on her neck were caused by the umbilical cord. “My child was from a legitimate relationship and there is no way I could have killed her,” she said. B But she failed to explain to the judge why she had decided to deliver the baby at home by herself. Prosecutors argued that the woman would not have done this, and kept the pregnancy a secret from her employers, if she’d become pregnant by her husband. The trial was adjourned until January 3 to provide a defence lawyer. ismail@7days.ae Read the original story at: Abu Dhabi maid on trial for strangling newborn baby
