In response to Anon and the letter ‘Why bring dogs here when they have nowhere to walk’, I find it funny that you think that dog owners are getting all their dogs from their own countries. Do you know that most of the dogs in rescue shelters in the UAE are Saluki mixes that are native to this region? Or that many of the people who have dogs have those Salukis and are actively trying to play some part in controlling the stray population? In fact, if you actually took some time to do some research, you will find that other breeds are almost always “fixed” and are rarely ever found in the streets or breeding out of control. We’re talking about something us dog owners have known for a while now that nobody wants to admit to. The dogs aren’t a foreign phenomenon anymore, we just want some support to help these poor animals have a decent life. We’re not asking for much either, just a small space to ensure those animals learn proper behaviour in public. Nadia, UAE So Anon ‘Why bring dogs here when they have nowhere to walk’ (Dec 29), the solution is to leave our dogs behind in Europe where we came from? A year and a half ago coming to Dubai was not on my radar, and I had a dog, are you suggesting I rehome him before coming? No we won’t do that, in fact we got a second dog before coming to keep the first company. There are places for dogs to run here, the desert is vast, there are dog parks opening up, people are asking for a BEACH not a place to run their dogs… because you know, dogs like to swim too, and there are loads of unused stretches of beach even though we’re told otherwise. Your letter is ill-thought and has no logic… Emad, UAE
