Mistaken identity – can I still be penalised by bank?

This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: Mistaken identity – can I still be penalised by bank? During the past few months, I have been getting calls from bank collectors. First call I got, they were very adamant in getting my MIDDLE NAME. Since I don’t know them, I gave a wrong middle name. After a few minutes, I got a call again and I was surprised when they told me I have an outstanding amount to be paid for a loan and credit card! First of all I did not apply for a loan or credit card. Even if I want to, I am not qualified because my salary is less than Dhs4,000. Second, they are calling me on my office landline number which is very strange since I know for a fact that banks contact people on their mobile numbers, which are given to them upon applying for a loan or credit card. I have the same mobile number since I arrived here in the UAE last 2008! At least, twice a month they are calling me regarding this and I am always telling them they got the wrong person. Can anyone please give an advice. I am very worried because I have read some cases of mistaken identities wherein the wrong person is charged for a loan he never applied for.
