Roommate accused of stealing man’s wedding savings

This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: Roommate accused of stealing man’s wedding savings A labourer stole Dhs5,000 that his roommate was saving to pay for his wedding, a court has heard. Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court yesterday was told the money belonged to the Bangladeshi worker and was taken from the pocket of a pair of trousers inside his suitcase earlier this month at their room at a camp in RAK. “I had forgotten to lock my suitcase when I went to bed that night,” the victim said. When he woke up in the morning, he says, he checked on the money but couldn’t find it. “I searched the entire suitcase and all my cash was gone,” said the 24-year-old worker, who earns less than Dhs1,200. He said he supports his parents back home but had managed to save the cash over almost two years to use to marry his fiance back in Bangladesh. They plan to wed when he goes on holiday early next year. He told the judge that he had asked his roommate whether he knew anything about the missing cash. The roommate, also Bangladeshi, said he didn’t know anything about the theft, the court heard. “My roommate told me that workers from the neighbouring rooms might have taken the money,” the victim said. “He advised me to report the matter to police.” The worker said his roommate accompanied him to the police station. But when police examined the victim’s suitcase and clothes, they found fingerprints that matched those of the accused. He was arrested and charged with theft, which he denies. The trial was adjourned. ismail@7days.ae Read the original story at: Roommate accused of stealing man’s wedding savings
