The UAE and other Arab states stand ready to intervene in conflicts as part of global efforts to confront terrorism. That was the message from Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who was speaking at a news conference hosted by the National Media Council on Sunday night. He said the UAE and Arab allies had shown they were willing to and would step in to combat threats, such as the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group in Yemen. Thousands of Saudi and UAE troops are currently battling the Houthis with the aim of returning the legitimate government to power. According to state news agency WAM, “the minister reiterated the UAE’s readiness to participate in any international efforts which require land intervention to fight terrorism, stressing that countries of the region are willing to bear the burden in this fight, as there is no room for foreign interference like the American intervention to liberate Kuwait.” WAM quoted him as saying: “Such a scenario is no longer feasible. So the Arab coalition in Yemen led by Saudi Arabia is the alternative model for us as nations.” Gargash spoke about the war in Syria, with a resolution key to the success of the war on terror. He said the “UAE does not see Al Assad’s presence as a legitimate part of Syria’s future”, but warned “choosing between Daesh and Al Nusra Front is not a realistic option.” Gargash went on to speak about the UAE’s relationship with Iran. WAM said that the minister said the UAE would like to “turn the page and start with new political relations based on respect and non-interference,” with Iran’s nuclear deal giving it an opportunity to build relations with its neighbours. But WAM reported that the indications from Iran “are not positive because of its continuous interference in Arab politics”. He said this would continue to complicate relations. news@7days.ae
