The UAE’s top court has cancelled a life sentence and demanded a retrial for two men who were convicted of selling tramadol and possessing a gun. The Federal Supreme Court quashed the verdict handed down to the two Arab men after it established that there were irregularities in the men’s defence as they were not represented by lawyers in lower courts. A fine was also cancelled under the new verdict. The two men were referred to court on charges of possessing, dealing and consuming drugs. They were also charged with possession of an unlicensed gun. Official records showed that the duo were caught in one of the northern emirates with large quantities of tramadol pills, which they intended to sell. Both the first instance and appeal courts gave the men life in prison and a fine of Dhs50,000 each. The men challenged the verdict and said they were wrongly convicted and that they did not have lawyers to defend them throughout their trials. Their case will be heard again by a lower court. ismail@7days.ae
