Motorists and parents have been told to reduce their speed near schools as part of a safety drive during the first week of the new term in Abu Dhabi. Brigadier Khamis Ishaq Mohammed, Director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said the main focus is on speed limits, seatbelts and preventing vehicles from stopping near schools and disrupting the flow of traffic. Mohammed issued the recommendations as part of the directorate’s Traffic Safety Plan, which was developed in coordination with the Department of Transport, the Abu Dhabi Education Council and Emirates Transport. Mohammed said that, as part of the measures, the directorate will increase traffic patrols and strengthen policing on roads and in the vicinity of schools in order to reduce traffic congestion. He also stressed the need for school bus drivers to abide by traffic laws and speeds limits and to be mindful of pupil safety at all times. He pointed out that the plan to ensure traffic safety for students during the second semester includes continuous traffic awareness lectures for students, within the strategic partnership with Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC). He said: “The plan aims to create a sense of responsibility in our students, and engage them in the efforts to provide traffic safety for all, as well as to enhance their traffic education culture. The plan also includes distribution of brochures and a set of awareness lectures about the standards and requirements for safe school transport.” news@7days.ae
