A teenager who caused the death of a friend in a car crash after a night of drinking alcohol has been sentenced to a juvenile rehab centre. The 16-year-old Arab boy, who did not have a driving licence, was found guilty of violating traffic rules and accidentally causing the death of his classmate and injuries to two others. Abu Dhabi Criminal Court heard that the boy, who is still at school, had been invited to a birthday party by a European classmate in the summer. Prosecutors said that during the get-together the children drank wine, smoked cigarettes and also consumed tramadol and hashish. “At the end of the party late in the night, three of the boy’s friends – a girl and two boys – asked him to drop them to their homes since he had a car,” said prosecutors. During the journey the boy spotted a police patrol car and tried to dodge the cops by branching off onto another road. After being chased by the officers, the teen, who was drunk and high on drugs, lost control of the car, hit the pavement and rolled the vehicle. “One of the boys in the car died on the spot while the teenage driver and his other two friends, a girl and a boy, also teens, sustained severe injuries,” said prosecutors. Police transferred the three injured victims to hospital where they were treated before being charged with consuming hashish and tramadol and drinking alcohol illegally. The Arab boy was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, driving a car without a licence and accidentally causing death of his friend and injuring two others. The children were ordered to spend time in a juvenile rehabilitation centre, where they will be treated for drug and alcohol addiction. The driver’s father was ordered to pay blood money of Dhs200,000 to the family of the dead boy. Officers said the father told them he bought the car for his son as a gift and advised him to drive carefully to avoid being caught by police for driving without a licence. ismail@7days.ae
