Letter: How do we stop potential killers on our roads?

This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: Letter: How do we stop potential killers on our roads? We are all potential murderers when sitting in car, as a car can be a lethal weapon. However this becomes even more a lethal potential when combined with a telephone. The use of telephones in cars, (when not hands free) is illegal in UAE as it is in many other countries, however this doesn’t seem to deter drivers using them in ever increasing numbers. How can this be controlled? Certainly the law seems difficult to enforce particularly when so many are breaking it. I recently had a near death experience on the Abu Dhabi -Dubai highway, where my 12 year old son, two of his friends and myself very nearly did not get out of a rear end shunt. This has made me question the use of telephones in cars and the lack of attention drivers have when using them especially when driving at high speed. For me there should be software embedded into all cars whereby it does not allow the use of telephones at all. This would immediately reduce the amount of accidents on UAE roads and the number of deaths. Perhaps the car manufacturers should be forced to come up with a solution. Fining people in UAE clearly doesn’t work, and how many children and adults have to die before we realize that telephones and driving just do not mix.
