I agree with Jose DeSouza (‘Police presence the only way to stop reckless drivers’ – Letters, Dec 21), I have even written letters in to the same effect. But one day it dawned on me after reading about the police bragging how many speeding motorists they had caught with their speed cameras. When I thought about it and how much revenue the government would have got from all these fines it suddenly made sense as to why they don’t police roads like they do in my country. If they did, people would be more aware and know that they take a great risk in breaking the law and get caught for so many more offences than they do now. As it is now, they don’t have that pressure, and so are not aware, forget about the cameras because they are lulled into a false sense of their speed by the 20kph grace or just don’t care because they get away with so much else. So you see, it is just a money-making thing the way I look at it, by letting people drive like idiots, they are not as aware and will speed and drive as they wish, it is not about improving the safety of the roads, you can’t do that with speed cameras alone.
