Two men have been sentenced to four years in prison followed by deportation for having magic mushrooms and marijuana delivered to their workplace by post. The British nationals, aged 24 and 33, appeared at Dubai Court of First Instance and denied charges of importing narcotics, however the court convicted them of the charges. Prosecutors said the pair imported 7.4g of magic mushrooms and 5g of marijuana into Dubai. On May 26, 2015 Dubai Police received information the men were having packages sent to the distribution firm where they worked in Bur Dubai. Drug squad officers visited the firm and asked the management to notify them when the next package was delivered. An Emirati police officer, 24, testified: “The company called to inform us that the packages had arrived and we waited inside.” A third British man came to collect the two parcels and police moved in and arrested him. He denied any knowledge of what was inside and said he was sent to collect them for his colleagues, the court was told. Officers then moved in and arrested the two suspects. “They denied knowing what was inside the packages and denied sending their mate to collect them,” the policeman said. “They claimed they don’t know anything about the whole matter.” Officers searched the parcels and found the drugs inside. Dubai Public Prosecution dismissed a drug possession charge against the third man in the case. ali.shouk@7days.ae
