Eight out of 260 Abu Dhabi teams have now progressed to the semi-finals of the du Football Champions’ UAE Schools Cup and Streets Cup after a action-packed weekend of knockout matches at Zayed Sports City. Al Dhafra Private School Abu Dhabi and International Community School (ICS) have made it to the next round of the Schools Cup Boys U16 category after gruelling matches against Al Dhafra Private School Al Ain and Canadian International School Abu Dhabi. A tough day on the pitch saw promising ICS player Taha Rabie play a starring role with a hat-trick in his side’s 4-0 victory. Rabie said: “We are always going for the win, we never look back, and push ourselves to improve every week. It feels great that we qualified but we won’t let the prize get in our heads, we will work hard to the end.” In the Boys U14 category, a total 59 goals were scored on the day with Al Nahda School and The British School, Al Khubairat progressing. Thirteen-year-old star Bayan Shalabi was in fine form as she led The German School into the final four of the girls’ Under-17s competition. They will be joined by Al Yasmina School. Teams in the Streets Cup had a challenging day with some sides playing up to four matches. EFF and the Phoenixes are the teams moving forward. Rami Abouhala from EFF said: “Tough game and tough opponent. As the day progressed the matches got more and more difficult, but we stayed the course and I am very excited about the possibility of winning and going to Spain for an amazing experience to get trained in the Spanish way of football.” Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, ADEC’s executive director of school operations, praised the students. He said: “It is great to see our students so motivated to do their best and prepared to compete at a national and international level.” Winners in each category will now face their counterparts from the Northern Emirates and Dubai in the semi-finals on March 12, 2016.
