A maid has gone on trial accused of stealing Dhs250,000 from a safe at her sponsor’s home. Prosecutors told Dubai Court of First Instance the 31-year-old Bangladeshi used a key to the safe, which was kept in a drawer in her boss’ room, to open the safe and steal the money on October 9 with help of an Asian worker. Her alleged accomplice is at large. Her Pakistani sponsor testified that he and his family left their house in Al Qusais and returned after midnight to discover they had been robbed. The maid wasn’t in the villa and the safe was open and empty. “They must have seen where I keep the key and took it and stole the cash,” the businessman said in official records. A month later, the maid was arrested but denied stealing the cash. She claimed the Asian worker, who looked after the garden of the villa and cleaned her boss’ car, was the one who stole the cash. She denied a charge of theft in court. A verdict is due in February. ali.shouk@7days.ae
