Two “totally drunk” thieves were caught after leaving their gloves and masks at a tailor’s shop they had just burgled. The Emirati and Comoros Island national, aged 47 and 29, forced their way into the Bur Dubai store then stole Dhs50,000, although they disputed the figure at Dubai Court of First Instance, claiming their haul was much less. The break-in took place on September 23. The men, who already had convictions for burglary, used a screwdriver to break the lock after midnight then trashed the store, shoving over chairs and pulling out drawers as they looked for cash. They also took off their gloves and masks, despite the store having CCTV, before fleeing. The Iranian shop owner, 36, said he got a call from security early in the morning. He said: “I received a call from the watchman telling me that the shop’s door was open. “I rushed to Bur Dubai and discovered that they had stolen all the money.” Police officers arrived and found two sets of gloves, red and black in colour, and two masks. They took the evidence to the police forensic lab, where they were examined. Prosecutors said that DNA from the items and fingerprints at the scene helped them identify the culprits. Dubai Police managed to track down and arrest the pair, who the court was told have criminal records for breaking into shops in a similar fashion. The Emirati was described as jobless and his accomplice as an employee of an unspecified company. Prosecutors said they confessed when questioned. The men also confessed in court yesterday – but said they only took Dhs28,000, not Dhs50,0000. They also admitted to consuming alcohol before the robbery. The trial was adjourned until later this month. ali.shouk@7days.ae
