An eight-year-old boy died and three members of his family were injured when their car overturned. Police said the 41-year-old driver and father of the dead boy lost control of the car and it veered off the road. Officers said the Asian boy had not been wearing a seatbelt and was thrown out of a window as the car overturned. Colonel Suleiman Mohammed Al Kizi, head of Al Rams Police Station, said the crash took place about 5pm on Sunday in Ras Al Khaimah. “The driver lost control of the car, which veered off the road and flipped as he tried to get back onto the road,” said Al Kizi. “The boy, who was in the back seat of the car, was thrown out the car window and landed on the ground. Investigations showed he was not wearing a seatbelt.” He sustained serious injuries and died a few minutes after being admitted to intensive care at a nearby hospital. His father, mother and younger brother escaped with minor injuries and were treated in hospital. Police have urged motorists to drive carefully, watch their speed and buckle up their children. Al Kizi added: “Buckling up a child in the back seat of a vehicle or a toddler in the child car seat can see the chances of them being killed or hurt in an accident reduced by 80 per cent.” The issue of children wearing seatbelts has been debated for some years, although a law making seatbelts mandatory has yet to be brought in. Abu Dhabi Police said they handed out 6,000 fines between mid-September and mid-October alone – one of the worst months on record – with officers saying drivers continue to ignore warnings. ismail@7days.ae
