More than 50,000 motorists have been caught driving recklessly on Dubai road’s this year by the police’s new radar towers. The force said that it has issued 51,891 tickets via the devices since they went into service at the beginning of the year. Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the traffic department at Dubai Police, said the cameras are helping the force crack down on speeding and cut the number of deaths on the road. “Since we placed these modern radars on the roads we have witnessed less casualties and safer roads,” Al Mazroui said. “This radar can catch speeding drivers on both sides of the road and record video too.” Of the offences recorded in the last 11 months, 21,347 were for driving on the hard shoulder while 20,780 offences were for jumping red lights. The radar can also catch drivers committing offences such as not wearing a seatbelt or talking on their mobile phone behind the wheel. Al Mazroui added that the new cameras, which look the same as other radar on the roads, have eight lenses. The cameras can distinguish between small and large vehicles as well as taxis and other vehicles assigned specific speed limits. Police said that there are 150 radar towers on Dubai roads at the moment. ali.shouk@7days.ae
