‘Parking charges in JLT really aren’t that bad…’

This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: ‘Parking charges in JLT really aren’t that bad…’ In response to the letter ‘Simple solution to sorting out parking issue in JLT’ (Dec 7), I am amazed at some of these comments. Personally, I feel we have it lucky here. I’m not aware of any major city where you can park for free. We’ve had it so good in Dubai for so long and now we’re being asked to pay Dhs650 per month to secure our own parking space? That’s a bargain if you ask me. How many of these people would happily spend that on a Friday afternoon out? It’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things and I for one have paid out to ensure I can avoid the hassle of trying to find parking. BMM JLT The parking bays may be owned by some who bought years ago as a potential investment purchase. So the investor has the right to leave the space empty or to lease at the price required/market value. 8,000 may be far too much, but not far too much if the investor bought at 120,000. Why should you avail of this investor’s property simply because it is not being occupied? Is that not like saying ‘here, stay in my studio apartment I have not leased it’. I’m lucky enough to have found a JLT space for Dhs7,000. I find that acceptable. I can’t afford to live in the marina and take an extra space for my wife so I have managed my budget, moved to JLT and pay part of the 15k I saved from a marina apt to having peace of mind by leasing a parking space.
