Australia survived a stern test in the Dubai Rugby Sevens Cup Final as they overcame Russia 31-12 to get their World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series off to the perfect start. Few had expected Russia to make the final, but they proved their worth by thrashing favourites New Zealand in their opening group game and then beating England in the last-four thanks to a last minute try from Marian Petrova. However, Russia refused to accept defeat and stormed back through Alena Mikhaltsov and Petrova to move into a 12-10 lead. New Zealand also required extra-time and a late try from Gayle Broughton to take victory in the Plate final as they beat Canada 24-19. In the bowl final, the US looked like claiming the win but a last-gasp try from Yoko Suzuk saw Japan claim a thrilling 15-14 victory.
