Police presence the only way to stop reckless drivers

This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: Police presence the only way to stop reckless drivers In response to the letter ‘How do we stop these potential killers on our roads’ (December 19), fines don’t work; super cars in police liveries don’t work; only REAL enforcement does. While our police forces do a tremendous job in keeping us safe and secure, the one area they fall short in is enforcement of the traffic law and the clearest reflection of this is in the accident rates. Riding shotgun down Sheikh Zayed Road is an interesting experience simply because of the sheer levels of stupidity on open display. If I could, I’d take pictures of every driver I saw (and that would be a few on an average 20-minute trip) and report them to the police. However, the law would not be on my side because of the silly clause that you cannot take pictures of moving vehicles with people in them. I could try calling the police helpline and the last few times I did, I was kept on hold until I rung off. The whole situation is pathetic. I’m grateful to the UAE for so many things but the traffic situation scares me and, in my opinion, really holds this country back.
