Australia women’s sevens coach Tim Walsh believes there is much more to come from his side after they survived a tough test to overcome Russia in Friday’s final at the Dubai Rugby Sevens. Victory proved the perfect start for the Australians as they bid to prove their dominance ahead of sevens debuting at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Russia had taken the lead in the final but the Aussies showed their grit and determination to secure a 31-12 victory. And Walsh believes they way they fought back against Russia in the final can only bode well going forward. “The entire women’s program deserves this result,” he said. “We’ve trained hard over the past three years but particularly over the past three or four months. “It was our day but it was by no means a fluke. We showed composure and an ability to solve problems on our feet.” Australia also had to cope with injuries to captain Sharni Williams and Chloe Dalton, proving the depth in their squad. “We put in a lot of hard work in pre-season and it’s really paid off,” said Shannon Parry. “Losing our captain was a big loss but everyone stepped up and hopefully we made everyone in Australia very proud.”
