My wife is currently sitting in the driving school waiting to take her final practical exam. She phoned me exclaiming that everyone walking past her is coming out of the test vehicle crying as they have failed. My wife doesn’t hold much hope as she failed last time. I can see how some people would say, “Perhaps she needs more practice.” To that I would say the system is wrong. There is a general feeling that all driving schools here can make good money by deliberately failing their students with the intent of increasing revenue. Dhs1,000 for every fail! The reason my wife failed last time was because she caused a collision! To this I wanted to go into the school, and see the damage for myself, and of course pay the necessary fees for the vehicle’s accident or get the police report or something – however my wife didn’t have a collision as she told me. FYI, she failed her highway test for not driving above the speed limit. “I was driving at 40kph”, my wife said. The examiner said: “You are allowed to go at 45kph”. How preposterous! I told this information to a policeman who was conveniently parked outside as I wanted confirmation about breaking the law – he rolled his eyes and said this is normal for these schools and drove off!
