The husband of the ‘Reem Ghost’ has gone on trial accused of plotting a series of terror attacks in the UAE. The 34-year-old Emirati appeared on Monday at the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi, to face seven terrorism charges. His wife, Alaa Al Hashemi, was executed in July for stabbing American teacher Ibolya Ryan to death in a toilet at Boutik Mall on Reem Island in December 2014. She was dubbed the ‘Reem Ghost’ by police after CCTV footage showed her calmly walking out the mall after the attack dressed in a burqa. Al Hashemi, 30, a supporter of ISIS and Al Qaeda, was also convicted of planting a bomb outside the home of an Egyptian-American doctor on the Corniche, sending money to Al Qaeda in Yemen and spreading information online to harm the UAE. The court heard on Monday that husband and wife were arrested together. Prosecutors said the man had planned to carry out terror acts, including bombing Yas Marina Circuit and Ikea on Yas Island. He was also allegedly plotting to carry out attacks on tourist buses on the Corniche and also attack an American base in the country. Prosecutors claim he planned to assassinate a senior figure in the UAE government, sometime prior to November 22. The court was also told the defendant had tried to join ISIS and had sought help from a member of Al Qaeda to travel to Iraq and Syria. Other charges he faces include manufacturing explosives and accessing terrorist and prohibited sites to learn how to make explosives, and gaving financial support to Al Qaeda. Prosecutors claim that he promoted both Al Qaeda and ISIS online and posted pictures of the ISIS flag and lectures from the group’s leader, Abu Baker Al Baghdadi. He also took part in writing texts encouraging people to carry out terrorist acts. The case has been adjourned to next month. wafa.issa@7days.ae
