A young man who was desperate to live in Dubai forged documents to make it look like he had a job offer so his family would let him leave home, a court heard. However, he was arrested on landing at Dubai International Airport when customs officials found the fake papers. The 19-year-old Afghan man is now on trial at Dubai Court of First Instance charged with forgery, which he denies. The teen arrived at the airport on May 12 and a Dubai Customs inspector asked to search his bag. “I found some documents belonging to Dubai Customs with the logo on it and other documents for a local bank,” the 24-year-old Emirati inspector said. “I noticed the documents were fake as I work for Dubai Customs and know how papers should look.” The Afghan man was taken to Dubai Police, the court heard, who questioned him about the documents. He allegedly confessed to forging the documents to lie to his family, making it look like he has a job in Dubai so they would let him travel. The accused told the policeman that he managed to get copies of the documents from the internet and printed them out to showed his family. “He was dreaming of coming to Dubai and his family wouldn’t let him travel unless he found a job,” the policeman said. “He got a visit visa and forged the documents of Dubai Customs to convince his family that he had found a job in the city.” The defendant put the fake documents in his suitcase before travelling. Presiding judge Ezzat Mansour adjourned the case to prepare the defence. The accused faces up to five years in jail if convicted. ali.shouk@7days.ae
