The Sudanese national, 20, and Egyptian, 18, are on trial accused of assault and theft. Dubai Court of First Instance heard the duo approached the deaf Moroccan as he stood outside a café in Al Rigga smoking at 2am on August 24. The Egyptian asked for a cigarette. The victim testified: “I gave him the cigarette and he knew that I was deaf. Five minutes later the second suspect came and used signal language to tell me he needed to borrow my phone.” Both men started walking away to a nearby alley with his phone, and the victim followed. He said: “I couldn’t hear what they were saying and I asked them to return the phone. They slapped me on my face and punched me around the eyes. I tried to defend myself but the Sudanese man knocked me to the ground and I hit the back of my head.” The students made off with the phone, a new Samsung worth Dhs3,300, along with Dhs500 in cash. The victim lost consciousness. Police managed to trace the the shop the stolen phone was sold to, and the vendor there had a copy of the Egyptian’s ID, leading to his arrest.
