You just have to love football silly season – those few weeks before the January transfer window opens when fans, agents and football chairman go a bit stir crazy. In England, the manager merry-go-round is at a point where Manchester United scarves are already being sold with Jose Mourinho’s face on them and Pep Guardiola’s name is being engraved on the manager’s office door at both Chelsea and Manchester City. If you thought the Premier League was crazy, take a look at La Liga. The Spanish top-flight has had a break over the festive season and it seems that bit of time off has sent the press into meltdown. Although Real Madrid are only two points behind leaders Barcelona, the knives are out for coach Rafa Benitez after only 16 league games in charge. So, who are the managers rumoured to take over the hot-seat at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium? One is Mourinho and the other is… wait for it… Alan Pardew. This is not a typo folks – we are just reporting the rumours. In an interview with ‘Marca’ Real Sociedad and former Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero says he expects Mourinho to one day return to the Bernabeu. But the big shock yesterday was the rumour that Pardew could be a contender for the Madrid job. The Englishman is currently in charge of Crystal Palace, who are flying high in fifth place in the Premier League. Speaking to BBC radio, Palace co-chairman Steve Parish went as far to say that although they do want to lose their manager, they would not stand in his way if Madrid came calling. Who knows what’s going to happen at Real Madrid, but one thing that is certain is they are playing tonight against Real Sociedad (7pm UAE time) and Benitez will be in charge.
