Cyclists in Abu Dhabi have been warned they will be fined Dhs200 if they fail to secure their bike to their car when transporting it. The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police said a poorly secured bike could fall off the vehicle and into oncoming or following traffic, causing serious accidents. It did not say if the warning follows any recent incidents, though. The directorate said drivers who fail to safely attach their bicycles will be fined Dhs200 and have their vehicle impounded for one week, as per Article 80 of the Traffic Code. Colonel Mohammad Dahi, Chief of the Traffic Investigation Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police, urged motorists to use correctly installed bike racks. “Bike racks are easy to install, they secure bikes in place and do not cause damage to the vehicle,” he said. “Transporting the bike inside the vehicle may block the driver’s view out of rear windows, ultimately posing a risk to the driver and other road users.” Dahi also urged cyclists to use bicycle lanes and tracks, as well as use front and rear lights or reflector after dark, and said cyclists should not carry passengers on a bike or tow by another bicycle. news@7days.ae
