The Iranian, aged 27, punched his Emirati victim repeatedly in the face before trying to escape. Despite the assault, the plain-clothed officer chased the assailant, jumped on him and managed to restrain him until back-up arrived. The incident took place on April 17 when the 30-year-old cop tried to stop the cyclist following complaints about him performing stunts on a pedestrian walkway on Umm Suqiem beach. Earlier, prosecutors told Dubai Court of First Instance that a security guard spotted the cyclist annoying pedestrians and called police. The officer said: “The guard told me the accused was cycling at high speed between pedestrians. I saw him nearby and raised my police ID, asking him to stop. But he ignored me and ran into me with his bicycle.” The cyclist then punched the cop on the ground and ran for the car park. The officer said: “I chased him and managed to control him.” The cyclist claimed he did not known he was in a pedestrian-only lane. He also claimed he did not know the man was a police officer. He claimed: “He didn’t show me his ID and stepped right in front of me and I tried to avoid him. He pushed me when I passed him and we fell on the ground. I felt dizzy and couldn’t stand and asked him for an ambulance but he held me by my shirt.” He claimed he did not receive first aid for an hour. The cyclist appealed against the verdict but it was upheld by Dubai Court of Appeal. Read the original story at: Cyclist jailed for attacking Dubai Police officer
