Thank you for the article ‘A tragedy waiting to happen’ dated Sunday January 10th. Yes overcrowding is putting lives at risk, I do agree with that because my brother is working for a firm and there are more than 15 workers in a one-bedroom flat in International City. The authorities inspected the place and issued a penalty, come salary there was a deduction saying someone tipped off the authorities and for falling to maintain the flat. How can 15 men from different nationalities, backgrounds maintain a flat meant to be for a small family. When people perish or they become homeless that is the time when one will start to understand, yet the boss is sleeping in a very nice and expensive villa to an extent whereby other rooms are not occupied. This is the time one needs to have feeling for another human. It’s good to enjoy your money but think about the people who are helping you to fulfil your vision. My question to the authorities is how do you handle such cases, any follow up system to see if the number of flatmates have changed, do you protect workers who report such matters? Yes there is confidentiality but if the salary is being deducted for reporting everyone staying in that flat? Or do you wait for a tragedy like fire, illness, violence to break out etc? Concerned sibling, Dubai
