Dubai Police have arrested a sailor allegedly caught trying to sell 50kg of opium after smuggling it into the country on his dhow boat. Colonel Eid Thani, director of the Anti-Narcotics Department at Dubai Police, said that the 26-year-old dealer was looking for a merchant to buy the drugs when police set a trap for him. He said: “He is a sailor and he managed to smuggle 50kg of Opium using a dhow. We sent an undercover policeman to him, posing as a buyer, and arrested him red-handed.” The accused was loading the opium bags into the car of the officer when he gave a signal and his colleagues moved in to arrested the man. The suspect denied having any knowledge of what the bags contained and claimed an unidentified man had tasked him with the job. The accused was charged with smuggling and possessing drugs. “We carried out a blood test and discovered that he had also consumed opium.” He was transferred to prosecutors. ali.shouk@7days.ae
