Graeme Smith against Test cricket ‘gimmicks’

Adelaide played host to the first ever day-night Test between Australia and New Zealand last week, with players from both sides speaking enthusiastically about the experiment under the lights. And while Smith understands the need to attract a bigger audience to Test cricket, he’s unsure whether a day-night game is the answer. “It was good viewing times for a television audience and Australia will be happy now as they are No. 1 when it comes to the day-night cricket circuit,” Smith told 7DAYS. “I’m all for strengthening Test cricket but not by making it a gimmick. “Also they need to work out whether it can work in other countries as the dew factor in India could make it impossible. Test cricket is the purest form of the game, it tests you physically, mentally and technically so I don’t want that to be lost.” Smith’s former opening partner Herschelle Gibbs also expressed his doubts over whether later finishes could work in other countries. “I am all for different inventions and experiments, but I’m not sure the interest will be there in other countries,” said Gibbs. “Obviously in England and Australia you will get big crowds, but I don’t necessarily think it will be as successful elsewhere.” Despite the reservations, Gibbs feels the ultimate decision should lie with the players. He added: “If the players don’t have an issue and they are happy, then bring it on.” Smith and Gibbs were in Dubai for a South African celebrities night at Fairmont The Palm.
