More than 2,000 people converted to Islam this year with the help of the Islamic Information Centre. Rashid Al Junaibi, the centre manager, said about 2,200 became Muslims in 2015 and more than 20,000 people have converted since the centre opened in 1993. “The centre spares no effort to spread the tolerant message of Islam, which fits everywhere and time,” he said. Al Junaibi said the centre aims to enlighten non-Muslims about Islam, as well as teach new Muslims about the principles. Among those who converted were 30 people at the Dubai International Peace Convention 2015, along with 35 at the Zayed bin Mohammed Forum and two at the 11th Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference and Exhibition 2015. “The centre also helped three convert to Islam at the bowling championship, and 21 converts at the first and second New Muslim Retreats,” he said, adding that five people from the Philippines and Brazil embraced Islam during the events. The centre also distributed one million books, booklets, brochures, CDs, lectures and leaflets in different languages. “The centre has run a variety of activities, spanning 3,694 lectures and classes, and 6,102 courses on Islamic Sharia,” Al Junaibi said. And he said the centre, based in Satwa, has plans for the future, including opening a branch in the Al Qouz “to reach over 58,000 workers” and in Ras Al Khaimah. The centre will also launch a ‘Peace Ambassadors’ project to train a group of Emiratis to speak about Islam and spread its teachings, he added. Al Junaibi said: “We will organise a number of activities and programmes in collaboration with the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai, and other concerned bodies at the time of Expo 2020.” news@7days.ae
