Last season Novak Djokovic hit new heights as he lost just seven of 91 matches; reached 15 of the 16 ATP Tour events he entered and won 11 titles, including three of the four grand slams. It was an astonishing 12 months that even Roger Federer would have looked on with envy. And the bad news for the rest of the men’s game is that Novak is showing no signs of slowing down. His gluten-free diet has worked wonders. Djokovic rarely struggles physically and his game has now reached new heights. By the time he retires he may well have eclipsed Federer’s haul of 17 majors. Such is his dominance that it is barely worth discussing who will triumph at the Australian Open. The world No. 1 is a five-time champion with a win percentage in Melbourne of 89.29 per cent. Djokovic knows he has the beating of any player on tour and having started 2016 with victory at the Qatar Open, it will take a minor miracle for any player to upset the Serbian’s serene journey to another title. While the men’s competition may be a forgone conclusion, the women’s draw appears wide open. The exerts of 2015 seem to be taking a toll on Serena Williams (or more specifically her knees), while world No. 2 Simona Halep has also had her fair share of injuries at the start of the year. In fact the entire top six have been struck down by either illness or injury in the opening weeks of January. Fortunately it seems unlikely that any of the six will miss the year’s first slam and it could well be that a winner emerges from this group. Rising star Garbine Muguruza showed her quality last year when reaching the Wimbledon final, but has never been past the fourth round in Australia. Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka had a disappointing 2015 but took the title in Brisbane, playing some scintillating tennis along the way. But perhaps the most in-form player on tour is Agnieszka Radwanska. The Pole won titles in Tokyo, Tianjin and the WTA Finals at the end of last year and was flawless as she stormed to victory in China at the weekend. The 26-year-old has reached seven quarter-finals, three semis and one final in her slam career. She has the game to beat the best and may just finally believe in herself enough to land a maiden major.
