Letter: Frustrated after SUV door ding in mall parking space

This content was originally posted in 7DAYS UAE website at: Letter: Frustrated after SUV door ding in mall parking space I consider myself very considerate when I park my vehicle next to another one, especially in narrow spaces that do not allow much room to open the doors. I always make sure that I have the door bumpers in place on all doors before I drive everyday for added protection should my car door come in ‘touch’ with a neighbouring vehicle when opening the door. I even make sure I open the door slowly to avoid touching the adjacent cars and I teach my kids the same. I recently bought a new vehicle, and I refused to take it out to malls to avoid car dings caused by inconsiderate drivers when they park next to other cars. However, the other day I needed to make a quick stop at the supermarket so I decided I would park in a space far away from all vehicles. When I got to the mall, the parking was fairly empty and I found a nice spot close to the mall entrance. I did not think anything would happen since I would be in and out in no time. Oh boy I was wrong! When I came out I found one of those big SUVs parked so close to my car even though there are plenty of spaces around. The car was so big and very close to my car that the driver did not have room to exit the car, which made me wonder how he/she did it; a perfect recipe for a car ding. When I inspected my car, not only I found a ding, but the paint was completely removed. The damage was so visible and clear which is an obvious sign that the door was opened with full force. When I called the insurance company, they said that they need a police report, and it will be recorded as “my” fault since the accused is unknown. I’m just writing this out of frustration. We as humans are very fortunate that god gave us brains to think, however, some drivers of big SUVs refuse to use it.
